Live Move & Turn Timeline
Determine First Player
Traditionally, player turn is determined by a coin toss before the opening move begins.
Player 1 Victorious!
Player 1 amassed 34 Marums, surpassing the 32-seed victory threshold!
The Mathematical Elegance of Marum Konbi
Traditionally known as "Egg Incubation", this ancient Manipuri strategy game is a sophisticated masterclass in modular arithmetic, continuous relays, and cosmic cycles.
The Board & Marum Distribution
12 hollowed pits in two parallel rows of 6. Player 1 governs the bottom row (pits 0 to 5, where 5 is Pi). Player 2 governs the top row (pits 6 to 11, where 11 is Pa). Exactly 5 Marums are placed in the 10 standard pits, and 6 in each special pit (Pi & Pa), totaling 62 Marums.
Turn & Strict Pi / Pa Restriction
First turn is decided by a coin toss. The active player scoops from an occupied pit on their own side. Strict Restriction: Pits Pi and Pa are strictly prohibited from being chosen as an initial starting scoop pit. They receive counters and participate in relays, but cannot initiate an opening move.
Scoop & Counter-Clockwise Sowing
The player scoops all counters from the chosen pit, leaving it empty. Counters are distributed one by one into subsequent pits in a strict counter-clockwise direction across both sides of the 12-pit track: 0 → 1 → ... → 5(Pi) → 6 → ... → 11(Pa) → 0.
Continuous Relay Sowing
When the final Marum in hand falls into an occupied pit and the very next pit (Pit + 1) also contains Marums, Relay Sowing triggers: the player scoops up all Marums from Pit + 1 and continues distributing them uninterrupted. The chain repeats indefinitely as long as conditions hold.
Si-kang-si vs. Nungkang
When sowing stops because the next pit (Pit + 1) is empty: inspect Pit + 2. If Pit + 2 contains Marums, Si-kang-si occurs: capture all Marums from Pit + 2 into your private store! If both Pit + 1 and Pit + 2 are empty, it is Nungkang: turn terminates with zero points.
Two-Marum Partition & Victory
When total remaining board Marums drop to exactly 2 in distinct pits, the game ends instantly: 1 Marum is awarded to Player 1, and 1 to Player 2. Scoring: amassing 32 or more wins. If both amass exactly 31, it is an honorable Draw!
Cultural Significance & Meitei Cosmology
In traditional Meitei culture of Manipur, Marum Konbi is far more than a pastime. The 12 pits mirror the 12-year animal cycle of the Meitei calendar (Chahi 12-gi Yums), and the distribution of pebbles mirrors agricultural sowing and incubation seasons.
Modular Arithmetic
In Marum Konbi, players intuitively execute modulo-12 calculations to calculate continuous relay loops, predicting whether a hand will land in an occupied pit to prolong the sowing or trigger a high-value Si-kang-si capture two pits ahead.
The Special Pits (Pi & Pa)
With 6 seeds each while standard pits hold 5, Pi and Pa represent foundational anchors. Because they cannot initiate an opening move, players must strategically navigate around them during early play while capitalizing on them in relay loops.
The Two-Marum Rule
Unlike many Mancala variants where endgame play dwindles indefinitely, Marum Konbi concludes decisively when exactly two solitary pebbles remain on the board, partitioned equally 1-to-1 to reflect harmony and balance.
